Health and the Gut Microbiome is a one-quarter, lower-division program that focuses on studying General Biology while investigating a variety of topics about the gut microbiome and its intersection with human health. Students will study the general biology topics of cellular and molecular biology as well as animal physiology to support their learning about the human gut microbiome. Thematic content will focus on investigations about the diverse community of microorganisms residing in the gut and their roles in digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function. We will explore how the gut microbiome influences various aspects of health, including metabolism, immunity, and even mental well-being. Topics will include identifying strategies for supporting a healthy gut microbiome, including dietary recommendations (prebiotics and probiotics), and lifestyle adjustments.
Students will engage with these themes using a scientific lens and an experimental approach to understanding the gut microbiome. Research, science communication, analytical and quantitative reasoning skills will be emphasized during explorations of both hands-on field, farm, and laboratory experiences as well as literature research projects. Students will apply their knowledge of biology and the gut microbiome through research projects, writing, and short presentations. Collaborative learning will be emphasized in all areas of the program.
